What To Expect During A Sound Healing
Alison Duncan playing sound healing in Breckenridge, Co at her Studio.
If you’ve never experienced sound healing before, it’s completely normal to wonder what actually happens during a session.
Do you meditate?
Do you fall asleep?
What if your mind won’t stop thinking?
What if you’ve never done anything like this before?
These are some of the most common questions I hear, and the beautiful thing is that there is nothing you need to know before you arrive.
Sound healing isn’t something you have to understand or figure out.
It’s something you experience.
Whether you’re joining a group sound bath or a private session, your only job is to simply show up, get comfortable, and allow yourself to receive.
What Is Sound Healing?
Sound healing is a therapeutic practice that uses vibration and sound to encourage deep relaxation, nervous system regulation, and overall well-being.
Different instruments create unique frequencies that gently fill the space around you. Rather than listening to music in the traditional sense, you’re allowing your body to experience sound in a much deeper way.
At Spirit Alchemy, I may use a variety of instruments throughout your session, including crystal singing bowls, Tibetan singing bowls, chimes, drums, tuning forks, ocean drum, rain stick, rattles, or other intuitive instruments.
Each instrument carries its own unique quality and is chosen intuitively to support the experience unfolding in the moment.
No two sound healing sessions are ever exactly the same.
What Happens During a Session?
When you arrive, you’ll be invited to get comfortable lying down on a yoga mat or massage table, depending on the type of session you’ve chosen.
Blankets, bolsters, and pillows are available so your body feels fully supported.
Once you’re settled, there is nothing else you need to do.
You don’t need to meditate perfectly.
You don’t need to clear your mind.
You don’t need to breathe a certain way.
You don’t even need to stay awake.
Many people are surprised to discover that simply resting can feel unfamiliar.
Our lives are often filled with constant stimulation, responsibilities, and mental activity.
Sound healing creates an opportunity to step away from all of that.
As the session begins, different instruments are played around the room, allowing waves of sound and vibration to gently move through the space.
Some sounds feel grounding.
Others feel expansive.
Some are soft and subtle.
Others are rich and deeply resonant.
Each layer contributes to an experience that is unique to every person in the room.
What Might You Feel?
Every experience is different.
Some people drift into a deep state of relaxation.
Others remain awake while feeling completely present.
You may experience:
Deep relaxation
A quieter mind
Warmth throughout the body
Gentle tingling sensations
Emotional release
Visual imagery or colors
A feeling of lightness
Greater mental clarity
A sense of peace and spaciousness
You may also simply enjoy lying still and listening to beautiful sounds.
There isn’t a right or wrong experience.
Your body receives exactly what it needs.
What If My Mind Doesn’t Stop Thinking?
One of the biggest misconceptions about sound healing is that you’re supposed to stop thinking.
You don’t have to.
Thoughts may come and go throughout your session.
That’s completely normal.
Instead of trying to force your mind to become quiet, simply notice the sounds as they move around you.
Over time, many people naturally find themselves becoming less attached to their thoughts as their attention gently shifts toward the experience of listening.
Without trying, the mind often begins to soften on its own.
Why Sound Healing Feels So Relaxing
One of the reasons people often leave feeling calmer is because sound naturally encourages the nervous system to slow down.
As your breathing becomes deeper and your body begins to soften, you may notice physical tension gradually releasing.
Many people don’t realize how much stress they’ve been carrying until they experience what it feels like to truly relax.
Rather than forcing change, sound creates an environment where your body can do what it naturally knows how to do.
Rest.
Restore.
Reset.
Sometimes the greatest healing comes from finally giving yourself permission to pause.
What Happens After a Sound Healing Session?
After your session, it’s common to feel:
Calm
Grounded
Clear-headed
Deeply relaxed
Emotionally lighter
More connected to yourself
Some people notice an immediate shift.
Others find that the experience continues unfolding over the next day or two.
You may sleep more deeply.
Feel more present.
Or simply notice a greater sense of ease throughout your day.
Every experience is unique.
There is no timeline your body needs to follow.
Drinking water, spending a little time in nature, journaling, or simply moving through the rest of your day a little more slowly can help you integrate the experience.
Do I Need Previous Experience?
Absolutely not.
You don’t need experience with meditation.
You don’t need to know anything about energy work.
You don’t need to be “good” at relaxing.
Sound healing meets you exactly where you are.
Whether this is your first session or your fiftieth, every experience is different because every day is different.
Simply arrive with an open mind and a willingness to receive.
Everything else unfolds naturally.
