What Are Chakras?A Beginner’s Guide to Understanding Your Energy Centers
Your body holds more than just physical tension —
it also carries energy.
Chakras are the body’s main energy centers, each connected to different emotional, physical, and energetic experiences. When these centers are open and balanced, you may feel grounded, clear, and at ease. When they become blocked or overwhelmed, it can show up as stress, fatigue, emotional heaviness, or a sense of feeling off.
You don’t need to fully understand energy work to benefit from it — your body already knows how to respond.
Crystals Support Chakras & Energy Centers
You may have heard someone mention the word chakras during a yoga class, Reiki session, or sound healing experience.
Maybe you’ve wondered what they are—or if you need to understand them for energy healing to work.
The simple answer is no.
You don’t need to memorize the chakras, know their Sanskrit names, or understand every detail to benefit from energy work.
Think of chakras as energy centers within the body. Just as your circulatory system moves blood and your nervous system sends messages throughout your body, many holistic healing traditions describe chakras as places where energy naturally flows.
When that flow feels balanced, many people describe feeling grounded, calm, connected, and more like themselves.
When life becomes stressful, overwhelming, or emotionally heavy, it’s common to feel disconnected, mentally exhausted, anxious, or simply “off.”
Energy work doesn’t ask you to believe in anything.
It simply creates space for your body to slow down, relax, and return to its natural state of balance.
What Are Chakras?
The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit word meaning “wheel.”
These energy centers are often described as spinning wheels of energy located throughout the body.
Each chakra is associated with different aspects of our physical, emotional, and energetic well-being.
They simply invite us to notice where we may need a little more support, balance, or self-care.
Many holistic practices, including Reiki, meditation, yoga, breathwork, and sound healing, work with these energy centers to encourage relaxation and overall well-being.
The Seven Main Chakras
Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Located at the base of the spine, the Root Chakra is connected to safety, stability, grounding, and our basic sense of security.
When you feel rooted and supported, life often feels a little easier to navigate.
When you’re under stress, you may feel anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected from the present moment.
Supporting practices:
Walking in nature
Grounding exercises
Therapeutic massage
Deep breathing
Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)
Located in the lower abdomen, the Sacral Chakra is associated with creativity, emotions, relationships, pleasure, and self-expression.
It encourages us to experience joy, movement, and flow.
When this area feels supported, we often feel inspired and emotionally connected.
Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
Located in the upper abdomen, this chakra relates to confidence, personal power, motivation, and self-worth.
It’s connected to the choices we make and how we show up in the world.
When balanced, many people feel more confident making decisions and trusting themselves.
Heart Chakra (Anahata)
Located in the center of the chest, the Heart Chakra represents love, compassion, forgiveness, gratitude, and connection.
It reminds us to offer kindness not only to others, but to ourselves as well.
Many people notice this area softening during moments of deep relaxation or emotional healing.
Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)
Located in the throat, this chakra relates to communication, honesty, and authentic self-expression.
It’s connected to speaking your truth, expressing your needs, and listening with compassion.
Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
Located between the eyebrows, the Third Eye Chakra is associated with intuition, inner wisdom, imagination, and insight.
Many people describe this as the place where they connect with their inner knowing.
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara)
Located at the top of the head, the Crown Chakra represents connection, presence, spiritual awareness, and a sense of something greater than ourselves.
For some people this may feel deeply spiritual.
For others, it simply feels like peace, trust, and connection to life.
There is no right or wrong way to experience it.
What Causes Chakras to Feel Out of Balance?
Life happens.
Stress.
Grief.
Busy schedules.
Lack of sleep.
Major life transitions.
Emotional experiences.
Physical tension.
Over time, these experiences can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves.
Rather than thinking of chakras as “blocked” or “broken,” I prefer to think of them as asking for a little more attention.
Just as sore muscles remind us to stretch or rest, our energy may simply be asking us to slow down and reconnect.
How Energy Healing Supports the Chakras
One of the biggest misconceptions about Reiki and energy healing is that someone is “fixing” your chakras.
That isn’t how I approach this work.
Whether through Reiki, Sound Healing, or the Spirit Alchemy Session, my intention is simply to create a safe, peaceful environment where your body can relax deeply.
As your nervous system begins to settle, many people naturally notice feeling lighter, calmer, clearer, or more connected afterward.
Rather than forcing change, your body is given permission to return toward balance in its own way and in its own timing.
Every person’s experience is different.
Simple Ways to Support Your Energy Every Day
You don’t need a professional session every time you want to reconnect with yourself.
Small daily practices can be incredibly supportive.
You might:
Spend time in nature.
Practice gentle yoga or stretching.
Listen to calming music.
Meditate for a few minutes.
Journal your thoughts.
Take slow, intentional breaths. Enjoy a relaxing bath.
Work with crystals if they resonate with you.
Attend a Sound Healing Class.
The goal isn’t to perfectly balance every chakra.
The goal is simply creating more moments where you feel present, supported, and connected.
You Don’t Need to Overthink It
One of the most beautiful things about energy work is its simplicity.
You don’t have to memorize seven chakras.
You don’t need to understand every energetic concept.
You don’t need to believe in anything for yourself to enjoy slowing down and receiving.
Your body already knows how to rest.
It already knows how to heal.
Sometimes it simply needs the opportunity.
If you’ve ever walked away from a session feeling lighter…
More peaceful…
More grounded…
Or simply more like yourself…
Your body has already shown you what’s possible.
